Throughout most of history, amethyst was regarded as one of the most precious gemstones. Renowned for its beautiful hue, this gem was held on par with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Often held exclusively by royalty, this precious stone symbolizes the Divine and was widely believed to keep those who wear it clear-headed and quick-witted. Amethyst became more widely available to the public in the 18th century when abundant mines were discovered in Brazil.
